NHL: Cole Helps Hurricanes Achieve Franchise Record 8th Straight Win


Erik Cole scored on one of two penalty shots and had a pair of assists Wednesday night as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 in National Hockey League action.

Cole became the first player to be awarded two penalty shots in one game, and he scored on the first to lead Carolina to its franchise record eighth-straight victory. Hurricanes Goalie Martin Gerber tied his career high with 41 saves in the game. The contest was played in Buffalo.

In Atlanta, goalie Mike Dunham had 26 saves and Marc Savard scored a goal as the Thrashers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0.

Elsewhere, the Detroit Red Wings at home defeated the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 in overtime, the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the St. Louis Blues at home 3-1, and New York's Rangers won at Florida 4-3 in overtime.
