Senegalese Police Arrest Ex-Chadian President Wanted for War Crimes

update

Officials in Senegal say police have arrested former Chadian president Hissene Habre, who is wanted by Belgium for alleged war crimes.

Mr. Habre was brought before a court Tuesday in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. The court is expected to rule on whether or not to extradite him.

Belgium issued an international arrest warrant for Mr. Habre in September. He is wanted on charges of murder and torture against political prisoners during his eight-year rule from 1982 to 1990.

Belgium is pursuing the former president under universal jurisdiction laws, which allow prosecution for war crimes wherever they were committed.

The 63-year-old former president has lived in exile in Senegal since he was driven from office 15 years ago.

A Senegalese court previously ruled it had no jurisdiction to try Mr. Habre. Human rights groups have been pushing for his extradition from Senegal for several years.
