National Zoo's Newborn Giant Panda Makes Official Media Debut

update

The giant panda cub at the National Zoo in Washington has made his official media debut.

Tai Shan, the fuzzy male cub born at the zoo in July, showed off his climbing skills to reporters from around the world Tuesday.

During the special panda showing, he bounced around his indoor enclosure and gummed at the bamboo shoots that will someday form his diet.

Zoo officials say Tai Shan, whose name means "peaceful mountain," spends his days exploring and has become an avid rock climber.

The 9.5 kilogram male cub is the National Zoo's first giant panda to survive for more than a few weeks.

He makes his public debut December 8, but thousands have already seen the nearly five month old cub through the zoo's panda cam.
