Turkish Boy Tested for Bird Flu Dies

update

Doctors in southeastern Turkey say a 14-year-old boy being tested for possible bird flu infection has died.

Authorities in Van province could not confirm the boy's cause of death, saying they were awaiting test results on samples sent to Ankara.

If confirmed, it would be the country's first fatality from the virus.

Doctors had taken samples from the boy and three other siblings who were sickened after eating poultry.

Last week, authorities confirmed that dead birds in eastern Igdir province, not far from where the children live, had tested positive for bird flu. Measures were ordered to contain the virus.

The infected birds were also being studied to determine if they died from the H5N1 strain that was killed 70 people in Asia.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
