Tennis: Top Seed Federer Avdvances in Australian Open

Roger Federer of Switzerland has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne with an emphatic 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 win over Florian Mayer of Germany.

The 24-year-old world number one men's player and top seed closed with an ace in one hour, 12 minutes in a dominating performance Thursday despite warm 31 degrees Celsius temperatures.

Fifth seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko also advanced with a 4-6, 6-love, 6-3, 6-2 over American Kevin Kim. Guillermo Coria of Argentina, seeded sixth, beat Italian Federico Luzzi, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the women's draw, Michaela Krajicek of the Netherlands eliminated 32nd seeded Sania Mirza of India, 6-3, 7-5. Aiko Nakamura of Japan defeated 31st seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina, 6-1, 6-1. Italian Flavia Pennetta, the tournament's 20th seed, ousted Martina Sucha of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-0. Sixteenth seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
