Colombia's Uribe Delays Campaign Launch

update

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has delayed the launch of his re-election campaign.

President Uribe was scheduled to start his campaign Sunday in Bogota, but sources say he has delayed it until after congressional elections on March 12. The announcement comes days after presidential allies accused one of Mr. Uribe's possible rivals in the upcoming elections of conspiring with leftist rebels.

The charges were later withdrawn.

Despite the stumble, analysts say President Uribe is a heavy favorite to win a second term in the May 28 presidential election. Since taking office four years ago, violence has been reduced, as Mr. Uribe stepped up the fight against Marxist rebels, who have fought a more than four-decade insurgency against the government.

Sources say President Uribe will spend the time focusing more on governing, rather than campaigning.
