Deadly Strain of Bird Flu Detected in Northern Cyprus

update

The European Commission Sunday confirmed that the deadly H5N1 strain was found in a dead bird.

Turkish Cypriot authorities say they have quarantined a 10 kilometer area around the village where the dead bird was found and killed a large number of birds to stop the spread.

Authorities in the Greek Cypriot south say they have taken all steps to prevent the virus from spreading across the border.

Also Sunday, Hong Kong officials say they found an infected bird near the border with mainland China.

Bird flu has killed at least 81 people in East Asia and Turkey since 2003.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
