Investigators Suspect Two White Men Set Alabama Church Fires

Investigators believe a pair of white men in their 20s or 30s, likely close friends, are responsible for the string of church fires in the southern U.S. state of Alabama.

Authorities are basing this belief on witness accounts of seeing two men in a sports utility vehicle near many of the fires, and on the conclusions of behavioral profilers.

Investigators say evidence from one of the earlier fires suggests the alleged arsonists may have been trapped inside a building and possibly injured.

An arson spree that began February 3 has either damaged or destroyed 10 Baptist churches in rural areas across Alabama. The latest arson fire was on Saturday. Five of the churches had white denominations, five were predominantly African-American.

Authorities say they do not have a motive, and there is no racial pattern.
