Officials in Afghanistan say a suicide car bomber and two Afghan security officers died in an attack outside a NATO military base in the western city of Herat Saturday.
Authorities say a guard at the base and a policeman were killed in the attack, which officials say wounded at least seven other Afghans. The bombing also slightly wounded a foreign civilian at the base.
A man saying he was a Taleban spokesman called news agencies to claim responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, a U.S. military statement Saturday said coalition-led forces killed two Taleban commanders and arrested five suspected insurgents during operations in southern Helmand and Kandahar province.
Taleban insurgents have unleashed a wave of violence in recent weeks aimed at expelling foreign troops and overthrowing the Western-backed Afghan government.
