Indonesian President to Consider Dropping Corruption Charges Against Suharto

Indonesian officials say President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will consider whether to drop corruption charges against ailing former President Suharto.

State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra says the president will meet with legal and political leaders later Wednesday, to discuss Mr. Suharto's situation.

Mr. Suharto had been charged with stealing hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds during his 32 years in power.

But government efforts to prosecute him on corruption charges have been stalled because of his poor health.

The 84-year-old former president underwent surgery on Sunday after a colonoscopy revealed bleeding in his digestive system. Doctors removed a 40 centimeter section of his intestine during the procedure.

Mr. Suharto has been hospitalized several times before for the same condition. He also has suffered strokes and heart problems in recent years.
