England Edges Paraguay in World Cup Competition

England's national football (soccer) team has defeated Paraguay, 1-0, in a Group-B World Cup match in Frankfurt, Germany.

An own-goal by Paraguayan team captain Carlos Gamarra in the fourth minute was all the scoring England needed. David Beckham made a free kick from the left flank and Gamarra inadvertently headed the ball into his own net.

England's next match is Thursday against Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg. Paraguay faces Sweden in Berlin on the same day. The Swedes and Trinidad and Tobago played to a scoreless draw in a Group-B match in Dortmund.

The so-called "Soca Warriors" are making their first appearance in the tournament and held off Sweden despite being a man down. John Avery was sent off for a second yellow card shortly after halftime.

Other action Saturday has two-time champion Argentina facing Ivory Coast in Hamburg in a Group-C match.
