Host Germany's football team has defeated Ecuador 3-0 in Berlin, while Poland came back to beat Costa Rica 2-1 in Hanover in Group-A matches at the World Cup.
Miroslav Klose scored two first-half goals Tuesday and Lukas Podolski scored in the 57th minute. Germany won the group with nine points from its three games and advances to the second or "knock out" round. Ecuador finished second in Group-A and also advances with six points.
Costa Rica opened the scoring in the other Group-A match when Ronald Gomez scored on a 20-meter left footer in the 25th minute. But Bartosz Bosacki answered with goals in the 33rd and 66th minutes to give Poland the 2-1 win. Both teams failed to qualify for the second round.
Later there are two matches in Group-B. In Cologne, Sweden plays England for first place in the group. A draw would give England the top spot and assure Sweden of advancing to the second round.
But a Sweden loss would open the door to Trinidad and Tobago, which faces Paraguay in Kaiserslautern. A win by the Caribbean side would keep their hopes alive for a place in the second round, while Paraguay, which has lost both of its matches, hopes to improve a disappointing tournament. So far, neither team has scored a goal.
