Portugal Beats Mexico, Reaches 2nd Round of World Cup

Portugal has completed its perfect run to the second round of the World Cup in Germany with a 2-1 Group D win over Mexico in Gelsenkirchen, while Iran and Angola played to a 1-1 draw in Leipzig.

The result Wednesday allows Portugal to advance to the second round as the group winner, while Mexico also moves on by finishing second.

Meanwhile, Angola's draw ended its slim hopes of advancing. The African side would have needed to beat Iran 4-1 to get past Mexico on goal differential.

Later, Argentina won Group C after holding the Netherlands to a scoreless (0-0) draw in their final match of the first round. Two-time World Cup champion Argentina will face Mexico in the second round on Saturday in Leipzig. The Netherlands face Portugal on Sunday in Nuremberg. Both teams had already qualified for the second round.

Also in the group, Bonaventure Kalou scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 86th minute to give Ivory Coast a 3-2 win over Serbia-Montenegro. Both teams had already been eliminated from the tournament.
