Italian Prosecutor Wants Juventus Relegated

Italian prosecutor Stefano Palazzi has asked a sports tribunal in Rome to demote football club Juventus to Serie-C or lower and strip the team of the Serie-A titles it won in the past two seasons.

In opening remarks at the trial into Italy's match-fixing scandal Tuesday, Palazzi said the managers of Juventus, A C Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio were involved in a "malicious" and "sophisticated" operation aimed at influencing referees and match results.

Twenty five soccer officials, including referees, are also facing charges of match-fixing and disloyalty.

Prosecutors in Naples, Rome, Parma and Turin are also conducting separate criminal probes into sports fraud, illegal betting and false bookkeeping, but indictments are not expected for several months.
