Baseball: Tampa Bay Edges Boston

In baseball's American League, Tampa Bay's Greg Norton hit a game ending home run in the 10th inning Sunday to give the Devil Rays a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Boston slugger David Ortiz hit his 40th home run of the season - tops in the major leagues - and the Red Sox built a 5-1 lead, but Tampa Bay rallied back to send the game into extra innings.

The Red Sox are now two games behind the New York Yankees for the lead in the American League East division. The Yankees hit four solo homers to beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-1.

Other AL winners Sunday were the Tigers, Twins, Blue Jays, Angels and Athletics. National League winners include the Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Cubs, Giants, Padres and Diamondbacks.

The Detroit Tigers improved on the major leagues' best record (75-36) by edging the Cleveland Indians, 1-0. The Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals, 11-5. The Toronto Blue Jays snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Los Angeles Angels trounced the Texas Rangers, 9-1. And, the Oakland Athletics got by the Seattle Mariners, 7-6.

The New York Mets scored seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Jose Reyes grand slam to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-1. The Mets lead the National League East division by 13 games. The Los Angeles Dodgers hammered the Florida Marlins, 7-3, for their ninth straight win. The St. Louis Cardinals cruised by the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-1. The Atlanta Braves downed the Cincinnati Reds, 6-4. The Chicago Cubs tripped up the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-1. The San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies, 6-2. San Diego's Brian Giles drove home the game-ending run in the 10th inning as the Padres edged the Washington Nationals, 3-2. And the Arizona Diamondbacks eked out a 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros.
