Rain Cancels Play at US Open Tennis Tourney

No play was possible Saturday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto washed out action at Flushing Meadows.

Two-time defending champion Andre Agassi of the United States was scheduled to play his third round match against Benjamin Becker of Germany. That match has now been postponed until 15 hours UTC Sunday.

Agassi also received another cortisone injection for his back, but said he is fine. The two-time champion is playing in his last professional tennis tournament. He has said he will retire once the U.S. Open is over.

Organizers had hoped to play some matches in the evening session, but persistent rain forced them to abandon all play. Sunday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 20s Celsius.
