South Africa Probes 1981 Disappearance of President Mbeki's Son

update

South African authorities say they have a launched a new investigation into the 1981 disappearance of President Thabo Mbeki's son.

A spokesman for the country's National Prosecuting Authority says investigators have uncovered new leads in the case.

Kwanda Mbeki went missing 25 years ago while attempting to join his father and other anti-apartheid activists in exile. Many people believe he was killed by agents of South Africa's apartheid-era government.

In a recent address to members of the ruling African National Congress party, President Mbeki said he is disappointed that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was not able to determine what happened to his son and others who disappeared. That commission was set up by former president Nelson Mandela, but was disbanded in 2003 after finishing its work.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
