Former Tennis Player Promotes African Water Projects

update

A South African-born professional tennis player based in the United States has found a way to use his name to help children in developing countries.

Johan Kriek is the founder of the Global Water Foundation. The newly created foundation is drilling a well in Ndolwa, Uganda, that will provide clean water to more than one thousand children in a school and about five thousand people living nearby. And that’s just the beginning.

Kriek spoke with VOA English to Africa reporter François Nsengiyumva and told him about the idea behind the foundation: “We started the Global Water initiative with the idea of providing clean water to third world children and at the moment we are focusing on Uganda and South Africa.” He says his foundation is planning fund-raising events to raise money for similar projects, and is now starting contacts with private donors.

Kriek says the effort is just beginning: tthe idea is to reach a stage when the Global Water Foundation will be a grant-making foundation that will attract people worldwide.
