Former Russian PM Hospitalized in Moscow After Falling Violently Ill

update

Former Russian Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar is undergoing medical treatment in Moscow, after becoming violently ill in Ireland and then returning home.

Mr. Gaidar's daughter Maria told Russian news media her father is in satisfactory condition Wednesday. But she said his life had been in jeopardy after he became ill Friday.

Mr. Gaidar served as prime minister in the early 1990s. He began vomiting and bleeding at a conference on Irish-Russian ties. Doctors have not determined the cause.

The illness struck a day after the poisoning death in London of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, who blamed his illness on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin has denied involvement.

A former top official in the Gaidar administration, Anatoly Chubais, told Russia's RIA Novosti news agency he suspects this incident is linked to Litvinenko's death as well as the recent murder of journalist and Kremlin critic Anna Politkovskaya.
