Chile's Gonzalez Ousts Nadal to Reach Australian Open Semifinals

Tenth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile has ousted No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain to advance to a semifinal matchup against Germany's Tommy Haas at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Gonzalez defeated Nadal, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday, just one day after the Spaniard barely survived in a five-set match against Andy Murray of Scotland. Gonzalez took advantage of his strong serve and ripped 41 winners with only 16 unforced errors.

He will be in his first Grand Slam semifinal Friday in the match against Haas. The German saved a match point before upsetting third-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko in five-sets (6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5).

In the women's draw, fourth-seeded Kim Clijsters rebounded from a loss in the first set to beat No. 6 Martina Hingis of Switzerland, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and advance to the women's semifinals on Thursday.

There she will meet top-seeded Maria Sharapova, who made it to the final four for the third straight year with a 7-6, 7-5 win over 12 seeded fellow-Russian Anna Chakvetadze.

In the other women's semifinal Thursday, unseeded Serena Williams of the United States takes on No. 10 Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic for a place in the final.

In the first men's semifinal matchup, world No. 1 and top-seed Roger Federer Switzerland takes on No. 6 Andy Roddick of the United States.
