Indonesian Man Dies of Bird Flu

Indonesian health officials say a 32-year-old man has died of bird flu, raising the total number of deaths in the country to at least 65.

Health officials say the man lived in the capital, Jakarta, and died Thursday at a hospital there. Indonesia has had the highest number of deaths in the world from the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

That strain has killed 169 people, according to the World Health Organization, since outbreaks began in late 2003, mostly in Asia. The virus is mainly transmitted by sick fowl, but experts fear it could mutate into a form easily passed between people.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization also has confirmed Friday the second human bird flu death in Laos.

The woman died on March eighth near the capital, Vientiane.

Authorities in Laos reported the country's first bird flu death earlier this month, in a 15-year-old girl.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
