The Chicago White Sox, in sub-freezing temperatures, came away with a 3-0 win over the visiting Minnesota Twins. In the National League, the Houston Astros snapped their season-opening four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals.
Atlanta's John Smoltz outpitched former teammate Tom Glavine to hand the New York Mets their first loss of the season in a 4-1 decision for the Braves.
The Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-5. The Chicago Cubs downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-3. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated archrival San Francisco in a 4-1 outcome over the Giants. The Cincinnati Reds tripped up the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-5. San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez ended the game with a run-scoring double in the ninth inning to give the Padres a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. And, the Arizona Diamondbacks thumped the Washington Nationals, 7-1.
