String of Attacks, Clashes Rock Southern, Eastern Afghanistan

NATO says one of its soldiers was killed and three others were wounded in combat operations in eastern Afghanistan Friday.

An official working with the alliance says the incident involved a roadside bomb in Mehtarlam district.

Elsewhere in the east, a provincial police chief in Kunar province, Abdul Jalal Jalal, says two women were killed and at least five other civilians were wounded in an attack by suspected militants. He says militants fired a barrage of rockets, hitting at least one civilian home.

And in the south, an official in Kandahar province's Zhari district says about 20 Taliban militants were killed in fighting with Afghan and NATO troops late Thursday.

Also Thursday, Afghan authorities say at least six suspected Taleban insurgents were killed and others wounded when they attempted, but failed, to abduct a police officer in eastern Paktia province.

A spokesman for the nation's Interior Ministry, Zemarai Bashary, says Afghan police need more equipment to battle insurgents.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
