The winning two-out single by Schierholtz snapped the Giants' eight-game losing streak, and handed the Yankees their fourth loss in five games.
The other New York team - the Mets - got a game-ending double from David Wright, who drove in the only run of the game in the ninth inning to edge the Oakland Athletics.
The Cleveland Indians used a three-run homer by Victor Martinez in the top of the ninth to beat the Washington Nationals, 4-3.
