The Giants had to rally from an early three-run deficit, and overcome a game-tying home run in the ninth inning by Yankee star Alex Rodriguez.
The winning two-out single by Schierholtz snapped the Giants' eight-game losing streak, and handed the Yankees their fourth loss in five games.
The other New York team - the Mets - got a game-ending double from David Wright, who drove in the only run of the game in the ninth inning to edge the Oakland Athletics.
The Cleveland Indians used a three-run homer by Victor Martinez in the top of the ninth to beat the Washington Nationals, 4-3. The Detroit Tigers won their sixth straight game, getting by the Atlanta Braves, 2-1. The Chicago Cubs defeated the Chicago White Sox by the same score. The Toronto Blue Jays downed the Colorado Rockies, 11-6. The Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros, 7-2. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays edged the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3. The Minnesota Twins crushed the Florida Marlins, 11-1.
The Milwaukee Brewers won their fifth straight game, easing past the Kansas City Royals, 7-1. The Los Angeles Angels thumped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1.
