The U.S. Embassy in Iraq says a mortar attack on the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad has killed at least three people.
The embassy says the dead include a U.S. service member, an Iraqi citizen and a person of unknown nationality. It says 18 other people were injured in Tuesday's attack, including five American citizens.
The Green Zone includes the Iraqi parliament and prime minister's office as well as the embassies of the United States and Britain.
In other violence, Iraqi police say gunmen killed five Iraqi soldiers at a checkpoint near the town of Samarra.
Separately, the British military says it killed three inisurgents in a raid on a weapons-smuggling operation in a southern Iraqi town near Iran.
Violence in Iraq has killed more than 250 people in recent days. A single truck bombing Saturday in a northern Iraqi village left at least 150 dead.
