Militants Attack Government Targets in Central Yemen

Yemeni authorities say militants have attacked government targets in central Yemen in a second day of fighting with security forces.

Officials say the gunmen fired on a government building, police checkpoints and a power station in the central town of Marib early this Thursday morning. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Yemeni troops killed four suspected terrorists in Marib on Wednesday. Authorities say the militants were involved in a suicide bomb attack July 2 in Marib that killed eight Spanish tourists and two Yemeni drivers.

Authorities initially said senior al-Qaida leader Qassem al-Raimi was among those killed Wednesday. But, officials said Thursday a medical examination showed the body was that of another man.

Raimi escaped from a prison in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in 2006.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
