14 Dead in Small Plane Crash in French Polynesia

update

Officials in French Polynesia say a small passenger plane crashed shortly after taking off from the island of Moorea Thursday, killing at least 14 people.

Officials say 19 passengers and a pilot were aboard the Air Moorea plane bound for Tahiti when it crashed around midday.

Authorities are searching for any survivors. But, an Air Moorea spokeswoman says all 20 people are feared dead. The majority of the passengers on board were French citizens.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

Moorea is one of several groups of islands scattered across an area in the South Pacific that make up France's overseas territory of French Polynesia.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
