Germany Wins WC Biathlon Relay

update

Germany's women's biathlon team has won a World Cup 4 x 6 kilometer relay event in Ruhpolding, Germany despite some poor shooting that cost the team three penalty laps.

Reigning World Cup champion Kati Wilhelm redeemed her squad late in the race with no shooting misses and overtook Ann-Kirstin Flatland of Norway to give the host nation the win by 24.3 seconds.

Russia finished third, 1:15.90 seconds behind the winners.

The victory gives Germany 200 points in the relay standings with only one event left in the season -- February 17th in Oestersund, Sweden. Russia is second in the relays with 178 points, while France is third (169 points).

The men race their fourth biathlon relay of the season at the same venue on Thursday.

Biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting from a variety of positions. Athletes must ski penalty laps or are given time penalties for missed targets.
