South Africa Punishes West Indies in 3rd Test

South Africa's cricket team amassed a huge lead over the West Indies on the second day of their third and final test in Durban.

Centuries from Graeme Smith, Ashwell Prince, and A.B. de Villiers helped the home side reach 556-4 declared in its first innings. The score was in reply to the Caribbean team's first innings total of 139.

Smith led the South Africans with 147 runs, including 27 fours. Prince had 123 runs not out with 15 fours, and De Villiers added 104 runs not out, including 15 fours and one six.

The West Indies need 417 runs to make South Africa bat again and scored 23 without loss before stumps Friday.

The three-match series is tied at 1-1 after the West Indies won the first test and South Africa took the second. The two sides will also play five one-day internationals beginning January 20th in Centurion.

Meanwhile, South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock announced his retirement from test cricket Friday. The 34-year-old Pollock, who has played in 108 test matches, will play in the one-day series before finally quitting the international game.

Pollock was left out of the first six tests South Africa played this season after questions arose about his pace bowling. He was 4-35 in the first innings of this test match.
