New Thai PM Takes Office

Thailand's new prime minister, Samak Sundaravej, was inaugurated Tuesday after receiving the endorsement of the nation's king.

During a speech in the capital, Bangkok, Mr. Samak asked the public for time to prove himself as a leader. Mr. Samak, who heads the People Power Party, says he is a politician and knows political ways and governance.

His speech followed King Bhumibol Adulyadej's ratification of his appointment as prime minister during a ceremony earlier in the day.

Mr. Samak was elected to the position of prime minister by parliament on Monday. He previously served as a top adviser to former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted during a 2006 military coup.
