Bhutto's Husband Wants Improved Relations Between India and Pakistan

update

The husband of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto says he wants to improve relations between India and Pakistan.

Asif Ali Zardari, leader of the Pakistan People's Party, says he wants to set aside the dispute over the Kashmir region so the two countries can focus on other issues, including boosting trade. He made the remarks during an interview broadcast on India's CNN-IBN television network Friday.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, but is claimed in total by both. The two countries have fought two wars over the disputed territory located in the Himalayan mountain valley.

Zardari says relations between India and Pakistan should not be held hostage to the Kashmir situation, and that both countries can agree to disagree on the issue.

Violence in Indian-controlled Kashmir has declined since India and Pakistan entered into a peace process in 2004.
