US Troops Kill Several Militants in Eastern Afghanistan

U.S.-led coalition troops have killed several militants in eastern Afghanistan while a roadside bomb in the south wounded five people.

A coalition statement said the militants were killed during a raid Monday in Nangarhar province. It did not say how many militants were killed.

The statement said troops also detained a militant suspected of helping foreign fighters in the region.

Meanwhile, in southern Afghanistan, police say a roadside bomb wounded five people, including three police officers, outside the city of Kandahar Tuesday.

Authorities say the device exploded as a vehicle carrying several police officers drove by on the way to a police training academy.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Taliban insurgents have been blamed for a series of recent attacks on Afghan police, who are sometimes seen as less well-trained than other security forces.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of the country's Taliban insurgency.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
