Turkish Air Strike Hits Kurdish Rebels in Northern Iraq

Iraqi security officials say Turkish warplanes have attacked suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq.

They say the aircraft struck an area near the village of Rekan in the northern province of Dahuk.

No further details or casualty reports are available.

Turkey has stepped up military operations this year against the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, both inside Turkey and in northern Iraq.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey for nearly 25 years, and during that time violence involving the rebels has killed more than 30,000 people. The United States, Turkey and other countries classify the PKK as a terrorist group.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
