Iran Plans Trial Run of 1st Nuclear Power Plant

Iranian state-run media say the country will conduct a trial run of its first nuclear power plant on Wednesday.

A Sunday report from the IRNA news agency says the "pilot stage operation" will take place during a visit by Russian nuclear power chief Sergey Kiriyenko of the Rosatom Atomic Corporation.

The report says Kiriyenko will also inspect various parts of the Bushehr power plant during his visit.

Russia began helping Iran build the 1,000 megawatt plant in 1995, and says it has already delivered the fuel needed to get the reactor running.

The launch of the plant has been frequently delayed, although Kiriyenko said earlier this month that he expected it to start up before the end of the year.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
