Zimbabwe Education Advisory Panel Targets Cholera Transmission in Schools

The national advisory board constituted this week by Zimbabwean Education Minister David Coltart will focus as a top priority on keeping schoolchildren safe from the cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 4,000 lives in the country in the past eight months.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe President Takavafira Zhou, a member of the panel, said the effort will focus on ensuring school water is safe, and teaching personal hygiene - frequently washing hands is one key way to avoid contracting cholera.

Zhou told reporter Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that his union for its part is distributing water purification tablets in rural schools nationwide.
