US Treasury Secretary to Meet with Top Chinese Officials

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will meet with China's top officials when he travels to Beijing next week.

The Treasury Department said in a statement Wednesday that Geithner will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao during the two-day trip, which begins June 1.

The talks will focus on efforts to strengthen bilateral economic ties and on the global economic recession.

This will be Geithner's first trip to China as Treasury secretary. The Treasury Department said he will also deliver a speech on U.S.-China economic relations at Peking University.

Earlier this year, Geithner upset Chinese leaders when he accused Beijing of manipulating its currency in order to gain an unfair trade advantage. He has since backed away from that claim.
