Golfer Sam Snead Dead at 89 - 2002-05-24

Sam Snead, the golfing great known as "Slammin' Sam" who won seven major championships, has died at the age of 89 following complications from a stroke. He was four days shy of his 90th birthday.

Snead's golf swing was described as the sweetest in the game. In addition to his major titles - three Masters, three U.S. PGA Championships and one British Open - Snead captured a record 81 PGA Tour events. Including victories outside the United States, Snead won a total of 135 events. He won tour-sponsored events in six different decades.

Last month, Snead was the only honorary starter for the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, a position he held each year since 1984.
