9-11 Victim's Family Accepts $1 Million Compensation - 2002-08-08

The family of a man killed in the World Trade Center attack has accepted more than one million dollars from the federal Victim Compensation Fund.

The anonymous family becomes the first to acknowledge accepting federal compensation in exchange for a promise not to bring a lawsuit over its loss.

The victim was a recent college graduate in his 20's, unmarried and without children. He had earned an annual salary of nearly $60,000.

The fund awarded his family more than one million dollars for his unfulfilled financial potential, and for the family's pain and suffering. To be eligible for the fund, the family promised not to sue airlines, the U.S. government or other entities.

The fund was created by the U.S. Congress after the September 11th attacks.
