Nigeria’s independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will hold a fresh round of voter registration next month.
This follows reports that the existing register was destroyed by termites. That and other incidents have led some Nigerians to question the commission’s competence to conduct the elections.
Okpo Sam Okpo, INEC’S commissioner in charge of information and publicity, told reporter Chinedu Offor that actually the register was destroyed by politicians wanting to interfere with the commission's work.
Nevertheless, he says the process will go forward, with the local elections setting the state for national elections next year.
