Nigeria recently launched the official one-year countdown to its hosting of the 8th All Africa Games. The African sports jamboree will be staged in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, from October 4 to October 18, 2003.
Nigeria is building a new 60,000-seat national stadium in Abuja for the African sports festival, often described as "Africa's Olympics."
VOA's "Nightline Africa Sports" host, Segun "Dot On The Spot" Adeyemi, had a chance to visit the stadium and tour other venues for the 2003 All Africa Games. Segun discussed Nigeria's overall organization in an interview with VOA's Sonny Young.
Segun said Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Nigerian government are backing the games. President Obasanjo launched a volunteer drive for the multi-sport competition on October 4, 2002, exactly one year before the opening ceremonies. Nigeria is hoping to recruit more than 7,000 volunteers for the All Africa Games.
