27 Killed in Cairo Bus Crash - 2002-11-06

At least 27 people are dead and 24 injured after a collision between a bus and a truck on a highway near Cairo.

The bus, reportedly filled with workers, was returning to Cairo from Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Egyptian police said a tractor-trailer, loaded with rocks and stones, had turned in the wrong direction and collided with the bus about 60 kilometers outside of Cairo.

Police said the driver of the truck survived.

The injured were taken to three area hospitals in Cairo.

Information on the identities of the passengers was not immediately available.

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Egypt where observers say there are poor road conditions and many unsafe vehicles.
