Palestinian Homes Destroyed in Israeli Response to Ambush - 2002-12-13

Israeli troops destroyed three Palestinian homes in the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday in response to an ambush that killed two Israeli soldiers the night before.

Israeli forces blew up three houses they say were used in Thursday night's ambush in which two Israeli soldiers were killed.

The two were guarding the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a site sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

The shooting was near the spot where Palestinian gunmen killed 12 Israeli soldiers and security guards in an ambush last month.

Elsewhere, Israeli troops killed a suspected Palestinian militant early Friday near the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

The army says the man was shot trying to evade capture in an operation in which three members of the militant group Islamic Jihad were arrested.

On Thursday, Israeli forces killed seven Palestinians, including five unarmed men the army says were trying to climb the fence separating the Gaza Strip from Israel.
