Tennis: Serena Williams Advances to Australian Open Semifinals


The women's semifinals are set for the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne.

Top-seed Serena Williams of the United States reached the semis Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-2 win over fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy.

Williams will take on Belgium's Kim Clijsters in one semifinal. The fourth-seed advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over number-eight Anastasia Myskina of Russia.

The other semifinal features Serena's sister, number-two Venus Williams, taking on fifth-seed Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium.

On the men's side, Germany's Rainer Schuettler advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win over Wimbledon runner-up and 10th-seed David Nalbandian of Argentina.

Schuettler will face the winner of a night match between ninth-seed Andy Roddick of the United States and Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui.
