Vietnamese Reform Economist Dies - 2003-09-01

Nguyen Xuan Oanh, a Harvard-educated economist who helped push communist Vietnam toward a market economy, has died at the age of 82.

Mr. Oanh was involved in creating "doi moi," an economic reform package launched in 1986 that aimed to pull Vietnam out of famine by allowing more private enterprise and loosening state control over the economy.

He also advised the Vietnamese government and helped to rebuild economic relations with the United States.

Mr. Oanh died Friday in Ho Chi Minh City of natural causes.
