Russian Teen Maria Sharapova Wins Japan Tennis Open - 2003-10-05


Russian teenager Maria Sharapova has won the Japan Open tennis tournament in Tokyo for her first professional career title.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova rallied to win a three-set final match Sunday against unseeded Hungarian Aniko Kapros, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. The 16-year-old Russian also won the doubles title Saturday along with partner Tamarine Tanasugarn.

Ranked 48th in the world, Sharapova is the youngest winner on the women's professional (WTA) tennis tour this year.

Meanwhile, the men's title went to top seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany who beat second seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.
