FIFA, the governing body of world soccer (football), has chosen South Africa to host the World Cup six years from now.
South Africa will be the first African nation to host what many consider the world's most popular sporting event.
FIFA's president, Sepp Blatter, announced in Zurich Saturday, that South Africa's application was selected over proposals by Morocco, Egypt and Libya. The soccer association's 24 executive committee members voted for the winner by secret ballot.
Tunisia withdrew from contention Friday.
FIFA is an acronym for the group's full name, "Federation Internationale de Football Association" in French.
