In Major League Baseball playoff action, the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 Wednesday night to take a two games to none lead in the best of seven American League Championship series.
Gary Sheffield drove in a run in the first inning to give the host Yankees the early lead. John Olerud added a two-run home run off Boston starter Pedro Martinez in the sixth.
Yankees pitcher Jon Lieber gave up just three hits and held the Red Sox scoreless until Orlando Cabrera drove in Boston's only run.
Meanwhile, in Game One of the National League championship series Jim Edmonds hit a three-run double to key a six-run sixth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 10-7.
The host Cardinals trailed 4-2 after four innings, but scored eight runs over the next two innings to put the game away. Game Two of the best of seven series is Thursday night in St. Louis.
