Women's Basketball: Griffith Leads Sacramento to Championship Win

Yolanda Griffith has scored 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sacramento Monarchs to their first Women's National Basketball Association championship.

Ticha Penicheiro added six assists for the Monarchs and made a key free throw with less than 10 seconds left Tuesday night, as Sacramento beat the Connecticut Sun 62-59. The Game-Four victory clinched the best-of five series for the Western Conference champion Monarchs.

The Monarchs are one of the WNBA's original franchises, but had lost in the Western Conference finals in three of the past four seasons.

Yolanda Griffith, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals, called it the best season of her career, adding that winning the championship "is just unbelievable." Sacramento is the third new WNBA champion in the last three seasons.
