Brazilian authorities working with Interpol have arrested a suspected member of New York's Gambino crime family who is wanted in the United States on charges of drug trafficking, extortion and murder.
Brazilian officials say 44-year-old John Edward Alite, also known as John Alletto, was arrested this week in Rio de Janeiro's beach district of Copacabana.
Investigators say U.S. authorities located Mr. Alite through e-mails he sent to friends in the United States from an Internet cafe.
A Brazilian police spokeswoman tells the Reuters news agency Mr. Alite has been living in the Copacabana district since December on a tourist visa that has expired.
He is awaiting extradition to the United States.
