Kwasniewski: Poland To Keep Troops in Iraq Through January

Outgoing Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski says Poland will keep its troops in Iraq through January but the new government will have to decide what happens after then.

Mr. Kwasniewski made the comments as he and President Bush met with reporters after their meeting in Washington Wednesday.

Mr. Bush said the United States and Poland have built a strong strategic relationship under Mr. Kwasniewski's leadership, and thanked the outgoing president for helping to advance the cause of freedom.

Poland currently has about 1,500 troops in Iraq as part of the U.S.-led coalition there.

Mr. Bush said whoever succeeds Mr. Kwasniewski should "come and visit" the White House.

Poland's October 23 presidential run-off pits conservative Lech Kaczynski against the business-friendly Donald Tusk.
